As the topic of this blog is of local and global importance, I am writing in both English and Marathi.

If you have a garden, you are aware that throughout the year a lot of garden waste is being generated. If you have big trees, they shed a lot of leaves especially during winter. These leaves, and other wastes like twigs, etc. too, if left as they are, will eventually decompose and will improve soil quality. In many cases to clean the garden, the waste is swept to one side and burnt off. Environmentally conscious individuals would compost rather than burn.

Burning in open air is obviously the worst of the three options, as it leads to a lot of local pollution. Composting is time consuming and also needs space and daily attention. Letting the biomass waste generated by plants lie on the soil around their roots is the best and most natural option. However, this makes your garden look unkempt, and also there is danger of snakes and other harmful animals taking shelter in the layer of dry leaves and twigs. There is also the risk of fire if someone drops a burning cigarette butt, etc., on the leaf litter.

From climate change perspective, all three options have the SAME effect - the carbon removed from the atmosphere by the plants through photosynthesis, is returned to the atmosphere, either through natural decay, or burning, or composting.

There is a FOURTH option of charring the garden waste. This will allow you to capture 30% of the carbon in the waste in the form of char - solid carbon that will remain as it is for thousands of years, if left untouched. In other words, 30% of the carbon is permanently removed from the return path of the biological carbon cycle loop. You have made your garden Carbon Negative!

My City My Responsibility: Going Efficient!

Dear All,

Wish you all a Happy and Prosperous 2018!!!

For me 2017 was an amazing year. I joined Samuchit Enviro Tech, made new friends and made lots of new connections nationally and internationally. Last but not the least, I learnt to be more Sustainably responsible.  So I already feel like a global citizen.

Earth rising over the Moon
Source: https://www.theverge.com/2015/12/18/10585198/nasa-new-earthrise-photo-earth-moon-apollo-8

Recently, I came across a beautiful quotation 'In Nature nothing exists aloneby Rachel Carson a marine biologist, conservationist and author of the book Silent Spring (1962) which initiated the environmental movement. Lifecycle Analysis is thus crucial to understand, since, everything in nature is interlinked and interconnected and we are an integral part of Nature. I hope all of you agree with me.

Now that we are aware of being completely dependent on natural resources for our survival, can we look at using our resources efficiently. By efficiently I mean using them wisely. I remember the days when I was in 1st grade and there was an advertisement on Doordarshan. The advertisement was about saving water while brushing, by turning the tap off when not in use. I am sure, some of us could relate to it. However I used to wonder, why such an advertisement was being shown on a national television. As I used a glass of water to brush teeth back then, so it was difficult for me to understand the importance of saving water and my action. While I was studying Environmental Science, I  learnt the importance of Water as a natural resource and that there is only 2.5% to 2.7% of freshwater available for us to use, out of the total water that Earth is surrounded with. I felt proud about my action of saving the water since childhood unconsciously.

Coming back to leaving the tap water running while brushing, a tap releases 6 litres of water in a minute and while brushing if we keep the tap running for say five minutes, we are wasting around 30 litres of water. That is roughly two buckets of water! These figures mean a lot when you multiply it with the world's current population of approximately 7 billion people. Isn't it too much??? This is indeed a whole lot. Therefore, being efficient is very much needed for our survival. And will ensure to make the use of available resources in a way that suffice all our needs.

Likewise, we can also use other natural resources like food and energy in a wise manner. There are many actions which many people take and are efficient but they themselves are unaware of it. For example I got to know about a lady who boils drinking water for the day and puts the vessel of boiled water in a larger vessel filled with cold water. The heat is transferred to the cold water making it warmer. Thus, the boiled water quickly cools down to room temperature and becomes available for drinking through the day, while she also gets warm water for bath when her morning chores are done. Another such example is while reading a book at night you don't need the entire room to be lit, a lamp light focused on the book can be sufficient. Even better if the lamp is a solar lamp.

The key is to be conscious of our actions. We can save our resources in everything that we do in our day to day lives and still get the desired output in terms of quality of life. Its all about being efficient and being responsible.

You can write to me about any such actions in your daily practices. All of us are undertaking such acts but never realize that we are already contributing to making the world a better place.

My City My Responsibility - Think before you consume

Dear All,

I am back and I am glad, all of you appreciate the idea of thinking before buying is it really needed? I am sharing an image created by my friend that shows consumption as a cycle where we get stuff from nature in the form of a raw material and give it back in the form of a waste material exploiting it completely.
PC: Rajath Dasanakodige Manjunatha

While understanding consumption one should know about the lifecycle of any stuff. By 'lifecycle' I mean the entire journey of the product right from the time its born till its death. The entire process involves generation of wastes in every stage of the cycle, which is also called 'cradle to grave'.

Lets take an example of the vegetables that we consume daily. We require fertile land, seeds, adequate amount of water, chemical fertilizers and pesticides, along with appropriate climatic conditions and consistent human efforts to grow the vegetables. A lot of energy is also consumed for harvesting and transporting the vegetables to our homes in the cities. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization’s 2016 State of the Forests Report 7 million ha of forests are turned into agricultural land annually in order to meet our food demands. Are we indirectly depleting our forests in order to fulfill our consumption needs? So what do we do about it?

As an individual we can explore options like Permaculture and organic farming in our backyard or terraces that can suffice our household food demand, wherever possible. Also, we should consume food as per what and how much is needed for well being.

However, the bigger picture lies in understanding lifecycle of any product. Since it helps us know from where and how does the product come to us. What are its impacts on our environment, health and economy? How can we reduce or minimize these impacts and act responsibly? Is anyone producing the same stuff as per 'cradle to cradle' (the waste of one product becomes source for another product) philosophy?

If we start consuming responsibly, businesses will be forced to produce responsibly.

My City My Responsibility: Think it through

Dear All,

Hope you all find it exciting to do our bit to make our city livable or say Sustainable. It excites me because it gives me a sense of ownership of my city along with citizenship. And I believe that when you own it only then you care about it. We own this Earth and so we should take care of it.

Regarding the solid waste problem that we are currently facing in our city, I am sure we as individuals are definitely doing our bit by segregating the wastes into wet waste and dry waste. As per revised city development plan our city generates around 1300 MT of solid wastes daily. Considering the current population, per person we are generating around 400 g of solid waste. Out of the 1300 MT, the household waste or domestic waste constitutes around 69%, i.e around 966 MT. While the remaining 31% is generated through street cleaning, hotels, markets, hospitals etc. Thus, in a way, 69% of the problem of solid waste is in our hands as citizens of Pune.

This led me to think that by segregating the waste I am helping in better management of the solid waste which is a great thing. But if I can help in minimizing the waste will it be even better? What do I mean by minimizing the wastes? Here's an interesting image posted below, which I came across on social media and felt like sharing. I am not sure who is the creator though.

Source: www.pinterest.nz

Its a simple flow diagram that directs you to think before buying is it really needed ? I know its easier said than done. But can we start thinking on these lines. It is about being concerned and thinking consciously about our actions which will lead us to Sustainability. We will discuss more about responsible consumption that can lead to responsible production in our next blog.

My City My Responsibility: Walk the talk

Dear All,

This is my first blog entry. I am going to post under this heading every Tuesday and share with you about how we can do our bit to make our city a livable place.

Being born and brought up in the city I am an authentic Puneite but not a typical Puneri I mean ''Sadashiv pethi''. Pune being a multi cultural city it invites diverse cultures, food, music, rituals, clothing, way of life etc. I believe that transforming has been the way of life for us as we are constantly changing.

I am a naturalist by passion and love to observe nature and the way it keeps on changing and accommodating us and our wastes. My passion got transformed into my profession when I chose the path to be an Environmentalist. I believe that as much as human beings are the stakeholders of the city, other forms also significantly contribute to our city. The trees, birds, insects, the animals, the buildings, the roads, the modes of transport and not to forget the Climate which is rapidly changing at the rate with which we cannot even cope up.

Change is evident and I feel that in order to make the change a better one for all of us, we need to look at the changes from a Sustainability lens. So what’s a Sustainability lens??? Let me put it simply, it’s our attitude and Punekars have lots of it...Just kidding! Our attitude i.e the way we look at our surrounding neighborhood, society, locality and last but not the least our City it matters a lot. An attitude that has concern, care and solution oriented, constitutes a Sustainability lens

While reflecting on the same lines I realized that even a small act can be a Sustainable one. For instance, walking instead of using a bike to go to a nearby grocery store (not more that 500 m) can help reduce considerable carbon emissions if all of us strive for it. It has to be an concerted effort through a conscious decision and an attitude to understand why this change is required. So if it motivates you to do your bit for your city, stay tuned...

MUSINGS FROM PRIYADARSHINI KARVE:

Image result for inequality in resources

MUSINGS FROM PRIYADARSHINI KARVE:

SUSTAINABLY SMART PUNE STUDY: Socio-economic equity indices

In the last few blog entries, Anu Kuncheria had summarised some of the interesting findings from our socio-economic surveys in one municipal ward of Pune city. This exercise also allowed us to define two indices for quantifying socio-economic inequity in the city, as described in this post. We would be happy to provide the templates developed along with a training in their use to civil society organisations in any city, for doing a quick and easy assessment in their own cities.

First I should clarify that in the context of our study, we have only looked at inequity in access to quality of life services for different socio-economic groups in the city. For this purpose we chose six service parameters, and identifying the minimum threshold for each service, as shown below:
Quality of Life Service Parameters

The sample survey data is used to assess what percentage of population in each income group has minimum or higher access to each of these six parameters. A well-being rank is defined on the following basis:

Rank 1: 0 to 10% households having minimum or more access
Rank 2: 11 to 20% households having minimum or more access
Rank 3: 21 to 30% households having minimum or more access
.
.
.
Rank 10: 91 to 100% households having minimum or more access

We also decided that we will take Rank 7 as the threshold. In other words, if the Rank is 7 or above, it means the access to that service for that income group is reasonably good. On the other hand, Rank below 7 is indicative of poor access.

On this basis, we define two indices:

  • The number of Ranks less than 7 for any one income group is a Measure of Deprivation for that income group.
  • The difference between the highest and lowest Ranks for a given parameter across income groups is a Measure of Inequity for that parameter.

Based on our own socio-economic data, we can generate the following table:
Socio-Economic Inequity Indices

For both the indices, lower value is better.

It is also possible to represent the indices and ranks graphically, as shown below.

Graphical Representation of Socio-Economic Indices
We believe that the two indices give a more objective and quantitative (and visual) idea of socio-economic inequity at the level of urban quality of life services.

The above is just a conceptual idea. The six parameters were chosen on the basis of whether they refer to basic services, and whether there are quantifiable measures for these services, which are easily available and verifiable, through surveys and/or secondary data. The parameters can be changed, or their number can be reduced or increased, to further improve upon the approach.

We chose the threshold at 70% or more population from an income group having minimum or more access to a service. This is a rather arbitrary choice. The threshold may be increased or lowered.

Finally, the actual data used in this description is not representative of entire Pune city. So the picture that emerges from this data, based on surveys in just one municipal ward, may not be an accurate representation of the situation in Pune city.

We are now in the process of developing a survey questionnaire focused only on the chosen 6 parameters, which will allow us to not only get data required for calculation of the indices, but will also give us a more nuanced understanding of access to these quality of life services. We believe that this can be an effective tool for a quick and easy assessment of socio-economic equity from an urban planning perspective for any Indian city.

SUSTAINABLY SMART PUNE STUDY - Survey Analysis VII

This is the last post on the Socio-Economic survey data for Ghole Road ward in Pune. The survey was conducted as part of Sustainably Smart Pune study project to understand how the various city services are accessed by people of different income groups. Today’s survey data for discussion is a)Electricity b)Internet and Phone Connectivity and c) Service Ratings.

Lets jump in…………………………………………………….

a) ELECTRICITY

Electricity connection is almost 100% in the surveyed area with only 1 LIG HH and 3 slum HH  without  connection( on inquiry, these 4 HH reported that they did not wish to have a connection). Two percentage HHs (household) responded claimed to have illegal connection.

When we analyze the electricity consumption rate, a large percentage of HIG HHs consume 200-300 units per month. The same is 100-200 units for MIG and LIG HHs. Slum HHs consumes 50-100 units per month on an average.

Almost all households had more than 3 electricity powered appliances.  More than 90% of the surveyed HH had a TV, Fan and Mixi.  Look at the whopping number of appliances!

     b) INTERNET & PHONE CONNECTIVITY

63% HHs have some form of internet connection as Wifi, Broadband or Mobile internet. 37% HHs still don’t have any form of internet connection. These are mainly Slum and LIG HHs and retired couples.

For phone connection, except 3% HHs, rest all had landline and/or mobile phone connection. There is 95.5% mobile phone connectivity across income groups. Most of the HIG HHs have both landline and mobile phone connectivity. Slum and LIG HHs have more than 94% mobile phone connectivity.

  c)  SERVICE RATINGS

Residents were asked to rate the various services in the city. Transportation was rated the lowest followed by sanitation, water supply and safety.

In this 7 blog series of data analysis, main topics of the survey were presented. We have more related data and if any of you would like to access it, feel free to email us. We would be happy to share it.

Inviting your comments and suggestions. For previous blogs, visit the link.

SUSTAINABLY SMART PUNE STUDY - Survey Analysis VI

In this blog on the survey data series, Solid waste management and Sanitation of Ghole road ward residents are discussed. For the previous blogs, check here.
SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT:

Solid waste management for Ghole road ward shows door to door collection and Ghanta Ghadi as the primary waste collection method.  Door to door collection of waste is above 60% in the higher income groups.  Households also  depend on Ghanta ghadi and street bins for waste disposal. Door to door collection is done by SWaCH. SWaCH is a successful model of  a cooperative of waste pickers, mostly women. It is operational in  Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad since 2008.  The city has a formal partnership with the cooperative and has authorized waste pickers to do door-to-door waste collection.

In LIG and slums, the disposal is mostly through Ghanta Ghadi, where the vehicle comes near the neighborhood and residents dump the waste into the vehicle. Street bin disposal is also common in slums. One main reason for not having door to door coverage in slums is due to their inability to pay for the service.

One of the survey questions asked people whether they segregate the waste or not. The data shows that while awareness of segregation is high among the HIG and MIG households, relatively large number of people in LIG and SLUMS are not segregating their waste. It must however be noted that the data is based on respondent's answer to the question, and has not been actually verified. This is noteworthy because in most of the HIG and MIG households it is the house maids who handle the waste (who are themselves from LIG and SLUM households) and not the owners, who have responded to the survey.

SANITATION:
There is full coverage of toilets in HIG and MIG households. In the LIG category, 73% had a toilet in their house, 21% were dependent on community toilets or public toilets and 6% were doing open defecation. For slums, only 32% had a toilet in their house, 46% were using community / public toilets and 20% were doing open defecation. Open defecation is more prevalent in slums located on the Mutha river banks and the Vetal hills. It is a serious issue polluting our rivers, hills and deteriorating the environment.

Under Swachh Bharat Mission, 32,000 toilets are built and more is planned. PMC is trying to tackle open defecation issue seriously and plans to make the city open defecation free within few years.

However, it must also be noted that the sewage from Pune is flowing into the rivers, untreated. As long as the municipality is not able treat all the waste water before releasing it into the river, all the citizens are equally responsible for the pollution of the river, irrespective of whether they are using a toilet or not! While the Swachh Bharat Mission focuses on constructing toilets, more innovative strategies are required to ensure (a) proper use of the toilets, and (b) 100% waste water treatment at the city level.

Your comments and suggestions are most welcome!
